My Study Space

My study space is the library. I come here because I feel more free when I’m doing my work. When I study in my dorm I feel like I’m in a jail cell. Another reason why I don’t enjoy studying in my dorm is because after a certain amount of time elapses, I most times get tired and take a nap in the middle of doing work. The disadvantages of me studying in the library is that I most times come with my friends and get distracted. In the library assignments that are short and simple, take hours for me to complete because I’m constantly socializing or on my phone.

Character

20120801-133750“What does characterization do for a story? In a nutshell, it allows us to empathize with the protagonist and secondary characters and thus feel that what is happening to these people in the story is vicariously happening to us; and it also gives a sense of verisimilitude, or the semblance of living reality.” (Karen Bernardo, Characterization In Literature)

Their are many different types of characters in all books and text. Some examples of characters would be protagonist, antagonist, dynamic, and flat characters.

Antagonist are the characters who create friction in a story, they are the opposition of the protagonist and in someway they are against the protagonist.

In the book “Buck” an Antagonist character would be the drug supplier (Bone) that Malo owed money to. Once Bone found out that Malo didn’t have the money to pay him back or the drugs he was looking for Malo to hurt him. Bone would be considered a villain in the story or enemy of Malo, making him an antagonist.

“Buck” disrespectful or reality?

fight-clipart-disrespect-14Some female readers might be offended because of the names that females are referred to in the book “Buck”. Multiple times throughout the book they are constantly referred to as “hoes”, “jawns”, and “bitches”. When females are the topic of the conversation, they are being degraded and or talked about in a sexual way. “Lets get this dick sucking contest started” (page 98, Asante). “With hoes somehow you always pay. Always” (Page 98, Asante). “Got your little boy right here” (page 53, Asante). In a way I could see how some females would be offended, but in my opinion the book is Asante’s reality and if this is how he grew up, by censoring words and his reality the book wouldn’t be authentic.  Also I feel like if you’re a female and don’t engage promiscuous activities then the book shouldn’t be offensive.

Buck Chapter blog post (constantly updated)

Buck Chapters 4-5

A quote that stands out or means something to me in these chapters is “My personality is who I am. My attitude depends on who you are.” (Asante, page 37)

In my life I’ve had mainly good reviews of my character from my peers, but some people feel that I’m arrogant or stuck up because I don’t speak around them. The people who I don’t speak around, I either don’t know them, or I have watched their interactions with other people and decided I do not trust them or want to be around them. This quote was relatable because it correlates to how I can be a really funny out-going person or I can be really reserved, it all depends on the person.

Buck Chapter 6-10

A quote that stands out to me “That’s Ginga! It’s an attitude, a way of life, like soul, style, and swag all rolled into one. It’s not just how you move, It’s when you move, where you move, and why you move… When it comes to girls you gotta have Ginga.” (Asante, page 55)

This quote stands out to me because the topic is relatable, and in the world of males the quote is very true. In high school and college, males typically learn that females want a man who stands out, you have to have charisma or your own uniqueness to even have a shot at talking to them.

My guess would be that we are reading this book to develop an overall life lesson once we learn the moral. This is a novel length, non- fiction text divided into short chapters.  The chapter headings are simple and easy to understand, and the titles of the different chapters help us infer that this book will take us on a journey of really personal, harsh events that a person has lived to see. The book has an epigraph that gives us a general overview of the book and lets the reader discover that is a memoir.  We are reading to retain what we have read, so that we can perform well on class test that we will receive.

Choosing A Topic

Things that affected my current attitude towards writing or reading were honors English classes, the kids were snobby and the teacher handed out an overabundance of work.

Even though I didn’t enjoy the class, it helped me become a more advanced English student teaching me responsibility, expanding my vocabulary, and molding my perfectionist personality trait when trying to write an essay.

My Teacher And Me

In the 2nd grade I would constantly ask my teacher how to spell words like “thief”, “brief, and “friend”. She taught me “I before E, except after C” remembering this helped me greatly on spelling test and paragraphs then, but overall made me a much better writer today affecting my literacy. Whenever I am having a hard time remembering how to spell bigger words that are related to that rule, I always can reflect and have something that helps me figure the word out.
