My guess would be that we are reading this book to develop an overall life lesson once we learn the moral. This is a novel length, non- fiction text divided into short chapters.  The chapter headings are simple and easy to understand, and the titles of the different chapters help us infer that this book will take us on a journey of really personal, harsh events that a person has lived to see. The book has an epigraph that gives us a general overview of the book and lets the reader discover that is a memoir.  We are reading to retain what we have read, so that we can perform well on class test that we will receive.
